How do I use the map?

The interactive map allows you to find out where you live and if you fall within any restriction zones. It also allows you find the contact details of your nearest Animal Health Divisional Office. See “What does it show?” to find out more about the purpose of the map.

Getting Started – Interactive map overview

When you first reach the interactive map page a screen, similar to the one below, greets you. The map is zoomed out as far as it will go and will show all of Great Britain.

Step 1 – Search the interactive map

To the left of the map there is a search option.

Type in a place name, postcode or a map reference e.g. TQ123456 and press the Go button or press return on your keyboard.

Alternatively left click on the Expanded Search option, below the search box. You will then be given the search options in three distinct boxes, as shown here.

Type in either a Place name, Postcode or a Map Reference in the relevant box and press Go.

The interactive will display the area of the country that you are interested in, as shown below.

Step 2 – Changing the size of the map

By left clicking your mouse on the larger map image option below the bottom left corner of the map you can enlarge the map. As shown below.

If you wish to return to the smaller map then press the smaller map image button located below the bottom left corner of the map.

Step 3 – Navigating around the map

A) Zooming in and out

You can navigate by zooming in and out and panning around the map.

You can zoom into the map by simply clicking on it. Left mouse click on an area of the map. The map will refresh and a more detailed map will appear. You can do this a number of times and each time you zoom in, more detail will become available.

You can zoom out and zoom in by also left mouse clicking on the zoom out and zoom in button located below the map.

If you wish to return to the full-scale map of Great Britain select the small GB imagesymbol located with the Print and File save buttons located at the bottom right corner of the map.

B) Panning around the map

You can pan around the map in either a north, south, east and west direction by left clicking on the green arrows located on the corresponding edges of the map as shown below.

You can also pan around the map in a north east, south east, south west and north west direction by left clicking on the green arrows located in the corresponding corner of the map as shown below.

Step 4 – How do I know if I fall within a restriction or control zone?

Coloured areas, identified in the legend, represent all restriction and control zones. If after applying a search, or navigating around a map you find that your premises are located within a coloured area, please use the legend (located to the left of the map) to find out more information. restrictions legend image

By left clicking on any of the coloured areas in the legend you will be linked to other web pages, which, provide information on what the zones mean, their legislative powers and any actions, which you as a poultry owner may be required to carry out.

To return to the map press the back button on your Internet browser software.

Step 5 – How do I contact my local Field Service Office (animal health)?

Clicking on the link above the map will take you to the animal and plant health agency site, which should have all the information you need.


Step 6 – How do I print a map?

If you wish to print a map of your area of interest, first zoom in or out and pan (see section 3) to your desired scale.

Next press the small printer icon print icon image located below the bottom right corner of the map. You will be presented with a print preview window.

Press the print button on your Internet browser to print the map.

Note: You can also print the interactive map screen at any time by pressing the print icon, or by going to File / print on your Internet browser.

To return to the map press the back button on your Internet browser to return to the map.

Step 7 – How do I save a copy of the map?

If you wish to save a copy of the map of your area of interest, first zoom in or out and pan (see section 3) to your desired scale.

Next press the small save icon save icon image located below the bottom right corner of the map. You will be presented with a preview window.

Click on the map with the right mouse button and from the menu that is displayed, select "Save Picture As..." or "Save Image As..." . Name the file and choose the format that you want e.g. bitmap.
To return to the map press the back button on your Internet browser to return to the map.
